Welcome to the Rio Grande Valley

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV), or what the local residents casually call the Valley, is located in the southern tip of Texas along the shore of the Rio Grande River and the border of Mexico. This border region is a unique area of the United States, with its own vibrant culture that is as distinctive and diverse as the Spanish and American ethnicities that coalesce there.

In the early days, the RGV was deemed the “Magic Valley” to attract settlers and to appeal to investors. It is now a vibrant delta area that thrives on agribusiness and tourism. The RGV is the center of citrus production and the most important area of vegetable production in the State of Texas.

The South Texas region occupies a diverse landscape including beaches, ports, ranches, and thriving cities. Comprised of four counties—Hidalgo, Starr, Willacy, and Cameron—the area is home to over 1.3 million people. The Valley is known for its year-round warm, sunny weather, exotic birds and butterflies, prime hunting and fishing locations, premier shopping venues, and its close proximity to South Padre Island. With its attractive weather and friendly environment, the Rio Grande Valley has quickly become a favorite location for vacationers and travelers from across the nation.

Why a Residency in the Rio Grande Valley?  Why now?

It’s been a long time coming.  For 60 years, this community has been looking towards the development of a medical school due to the tremendous need for medical care in our area.  It’s meant a lot to me to watch our communities, which have always been very proud and provincial and separate, come together in a regional way to be able to make something extraordinary happen.  What’s happening today is an evolution of a new university that I believe will be a world-class university, because of the population it serves and the opportunities it gives to the people here.  We have one of the highest instances of diabetes anywhere in the country and there is great medical need.  People here may go their entire lives without having access to healthcare.  Today, medical education is not simply about learning about disease and patient care 101, it goes beyond that.  It goes to being part of a community and community health.  There’s no better place to do that than at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance.
