The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Family Medicine Residency, founded in 2014, focuses on comprehensive, family-oriented care for an underserved population. The residency program is designed to emphasize the Family Medicine continuity setting to care for populations in varying systems. We provide team-based, collaborative, integrated (inter-professional) healthcare and education to meet the goals of the healthcare system of the future. The program also takes advantage of the vast array of in-depth expertise and rich resources of the university setting for intensive, focused experiences in other specialties when appropriate. We offer an individualized education plan to focus on areas of interest such as preventive medicine, international medicine, sports medicine, advanced OB and integrative medicine. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME. We are currently accepting applications for first year residents.

How to Apply

 

Our interview season extends from October through January. We only accept applications through ERAS.

 

Interviews are offered only after review of your application and supporting materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). No paper applications will be accepted. The number of interview slots is limited, so please submit your application materials as early as possible.

 

Please use the following guidelines to complete your application.

 

  1. Completed online ERAS application.
  2. Dean's letter from your medical school.
  3. Three letters of recommendation from physicians with whom you worked during your training.
  4. A recent photograph.
  5. Personal statement detailing your interest in Family Medicine as your career specialty.
  6. Reports of your USMLE scores or COMLEX scores for osteopathic students (requires a fee paid by student).
  7. Medical School Transcript.
  8. We prefer individuals who have graduated from medical school within the past 3 years. For any applicant who graduated from medical school more than one year ago, we will want to know that you have been active in significant medical experiences in the intervening years and have kept current in your medical knowledge.

 

Additional guidelines for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

 

IMG requirements are the same as US graduates. The following are also considered.

 

  1. Eligible for licensure in Texas. (TMB)
  2. ECFMG certified (if applicant still in medical school, must be ECFMG by June 30).
  3. Must be eligible for employment in the United States on July 1 of the year of the Match.
  4. Recent clinical experience, preferably in the United States.
  5. The ability to demonstrate a true commitment to family medicine.

Curriculum

 

The Family Practice Residency Program holds many conferences. On Friday afternoons, all residents gather for didactic training which includes lectures, workshops, and other scholarly sessions. The series is designed to present the "Core Curriculum" for the Residency Program over the three years and to prepare the residents for practice and to pass the board exam. The residency uses novel, state of the art modalities to include Blackboard, asynchronous learning, and audience response systems. The didactic sessions are experiential and problem based throughout the longitudinal and developmental curriculum. The focus of these sessions during the first six months of the intern year is to prepare the resident for the in-training examination. Additional topics are drawn largely from the major specialty disciplines and repeat in an 18-month cycle to ensure access for all residents to include Pediatrics, General and Specialty Internal Medicine, Sports Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Practice Management, Geriatrics, Global and Community Medicine, Surgery, LGBT Medicine, Professionalism, PCMH and systems-based medicine. Increasing autonomy is emphasized in all areas of education. In addition, many other conferences are available, which include:

Family Health Center

The Family Health Center is located on the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) Health System campus. It serves as the focal point for the education of the residents during their training, and is the venue for their continuity practice.

The Family Health Center is central, but Doctors Hospital at Renaissance also serves as a vital training site for our residents. DHR is the main hospital for our residency. Continually expanding and growing to meet the needs of our communities, the hospital is a state-of-the-art facility with other residents working together to provide the best learning experience.

Sub-Acute Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities

As acute care hospitalization rates fall, it becomes important for family medicine physicians to develop the skills necessary to care for patients in sub-acute care and nursing home settings. Our residents, under the supervision of family medicine faculty, care for people in these settings - both in a block rotation and longitudinally through all three years of residency.

 

Community Family Practice and Specialty Clinics

As the New Model of Care evolves, new practice settings are increasingly important. Our residents have the opportunity to care for patients in such varied settings as public health department clinics, juvenile detention centers, skilled nursing facilities, nursing homes and private practices. Focusing on integrated care, we plan, train, and evaluate together in a team-based learning environment that maximizes resource utilization and provides efficient and effective patient care.

Maternity Care

Our program's maternity care curriculum takes advantage of multiple teaching sites. Residents spend three months in the The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance. In this setting, residents care for moms and babies, perform deliveries, and provide newborn care under the supervision of family medicine faculty. In addition, the rotation includes time in community pre-natal clinics. Electives in advanced obstetrics are also available depending on resident educational needs.

 

Ambulatory Procedures

Each resident spends two four-week blocks in the ambulatory procedures rotation block which affords training in minor surgery, vasectomies, colposcopies, circumcisions, and other common outpatient procedures under the supervision of family medicine faculty.

 

Geriatrics

The department is proud to be a Hartford Center of Excellence for Geriatric Education. The curriculum in geriatrics is strong and is taught by family medicine faculty. In addition, residents who wish to receive specialize training or even a Master’s in Gerontology, are invited to take advantage of the training, mentorship, conference opportunities, and more through the Hartford grant program.

 

Behavioral Science

Residents in our program enjoy both a block and longitudinal experience in the area of behavioral science taught by family medicine faculty.

 

Pediatrics

Each resident spends two four-week blocks in an ambulatory pediatrics rotation. During these rotations, residents gain experience in well-child checks, pediatric acute care visits and other common outpatient health problems of children. In addition to ambulatory pediatrics, residents also spend four weeks on an inpatient pediatric services and four weeks in the newborn nursery.

Community Medicine

 

Community context is central to our patient care mission. Our program places residents in a wide range of clinical settings all across Rio Grande Valley- with special emphasis on serving those areas that are underserved.

 

All residents receive special training and skill development in the competencies of community medicine. This curricular area is scheduled both in longitudinal and block experiences during the three years of residency. Additional elective time is available for interested residents. Community medicine experiences are developed and taught by Family Medicine faculty members.

 

Residents complete activities designed to familiarize them with community resources and agencies in order to better serve the special needs of an underserved population. Residents gain experience in community settings including school health centers, United Way agencies, group homes, and nursing homes. Our faculty and residents also serve the community by participating in health fairs and other health promotion activities and are active in the indigent care Hope Clinic and Colonia Outreach. A bi-national approach to care of the Rio Grande Valley focuses on collaboration between Mexico and the United States. These opportunities are unique to the Border and augment the Global Medicine experiences.

Scholarly Activity

 

We encourage our residents to participate in scholarly projects. All residents are required to complete to QI/Patient Safety projects, Journal Club presentations, and participate in multiple committees that focus on evidence-based methods for inquiry.  Faculty are active in research, presentations, and are members of various international and national level organizations.  Research interests of the faculty include, well-being, community-based success, integrated and collaborative approaches to health, reduction of health disparities, and alternative and integrative medicine.  A 200K research center is located on the DHR campus with multiple research opportunities available for residents and students.

 

Research methods, epidemiology and statistics, review of the literature and evidence-based inquiry are taught in a longitudinal curriculum and all faculty participate are fellowship trained in academia. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), School of Medicine is located ten minutes away with advanced opportunities for research and scholarly activity.

Curtis L. Galke, DO

Program Director

 

 

Curtis Lloyd Galke completed his undergraduate work at Brigham Young University in university studies with an emphasis in Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology and Spanish.  He attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona California with a Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Air Force.  He completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at Scott Air Force Base in O’Fallon, Illinois.  After residency he served as a family physician as well as flight medicine specialist at Howard Air Force Base in the Republic of Panama.

 

As a flight medicine specialist, Dr. Galke was not only charged with the welfare of Air Force pilots and their families but also focused his studies on international affairs, travel and tropical medicine.  While in Panama, Dr. Galke was also the designated physician for all Air Force HIV patients assigned to the Republic of Panama.

 

At the conclusion of his military service Dr. Galke was asked to help integrate an Air Force and civilian Family Medicine residency program sponsored by St Louis University in Belleville, IL.

 

While teaching at the newly formed St Louis University Family Medicine Residency program, he developed an interest in Emergency Medicine and worked in several rural as well as urban emergency departments throughout southern Illinois.  Dr. Galke continued to practice emergency medicine in Idaho where he became a part owner of a multi-specialty group and practiced a full scope of family medicine in addition to his work in the emergency department.

 

After several years of managing his own practice, Dr. Galke joined the Foreign Service and served as a regional medical officer for the US State Department in Mexico City and Panama City.  His responsibilities included evaluation of available medical care to US diplomats and their families in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, managing aeromedical evacuation for critically ill or injured diplomats and aiding host nation medical and law enforcement in developing acute trauma and life support infrastructure.

 

Dr. Galke has served a two year church mission in Mexico City where he worked with the underserved.  Since his mission he has continued to maintain fluency in Spanish and has worked extensively with the underserved Spanish speaking population.   He has worked on two different grants in southern Texas whose purpose is to develop a sustainable healthcare model for those with chronic diagnosis and are medically underserved.

 

Dr. Galke has an interest in integrative medicine and is currently participating in a fellowship in Endobiogeny.  As part of his faculty development Dr. Galke is writing a curriculum for a global medicine tract and doing research in Family Medicine resident recruitment.

Deepu George, PhD

Behavioral Science Faculty

 

 

Deepu George completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, India. He completed MS in Holistic Psychological Counseling with a specialization in Family Therapy from Montfort College, Bangalore, India. After a number of years working as a clinician, consultant, and researcher in Bangalore, he began his doctoral work in the US in Family therapy. Deepu completed his Medical Family Therapy and Integrated Care residency at Duke / SR-AHEC Family Medicine Residency in Fayetteville, NC and completed his doctoral degree in 2014 from the University of Georgia.

 

During his graduate work, he focused on military families and communities in his work with Dr. Jay A. Mancini at the Family and Community Resilience Lab at the University of Georgia. His residency focused on behavioral health work in primary care settings as well as in a graduate medical education for family medicine residents. He is trained in integrated and team based care and has experience in working with faculty as well as resident physicians on managing psychosocial aspects of health, illness, and recovery. He established presence of the behavioral health resident in in-patient rounds, worked on projects related to educational aspects of integrated care rotation for residents, and transition of care planning approach for frequent utilizers of the health care system. Deepu has a long standing passion and commitment to understanding the role of communities in shaping human behavior. His dissertation research focused on longitudinal influence of neighborhoods, social integration, and social participation on health behavior, particularly physical activity. He was also instrumental in collaborating with the faculty fellow, Dr. Rebekah Collymore on developing a narrative medicine elective curriculum for the residency. He chose the Duke/SR-AHEC residency because of its emphasis on integrated and team based care, innovation in health care delivery, and serving a rural population.

 

Deepu has an interest in developing community oriented care models through diverse partnerships with the goal of increasing access to healthcare for underserved and the under privileged. He is interested in using his training in family systems, community capacity building, and his commitment to social justice to develop programs, rotations, and partnerships to serve varied populations in the valley. For him, being a behavioral science faculty has been a dream position since the beginning of his doctoral work and is very excited to be at DHR Family Medicine Residency.

Jimmy Gonzales, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor

 

Jimmy Gonzales, M.D. graduated cum laude and received a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in College Station.  He is a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 2006 Whoop! He earned his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX.  After medical school he completed a preliminary year in General Surgery at Parkland/UT Southwestern.  Dr. Gonzales then went on to complete his Family Medicine Residency at Scott & White/Texas A&M HSC in Temple, TX.  After residency he completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. During his fellowship Dr. Gonzales presented a podium presentation for a case study at the national meeting for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

 

Dr. Gonzales is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and also board certified in Sports Medicine. In addition, he is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

 

Dr. Gonzales has recently accepted a full time position with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Family Medicine Residency Program as Director of Sports Medicine. He serves as the team physician for UTRGV athletics.  He looks forward to educating new and future Family Medicine Physicians.

Eron Manusov, MD

Chairman

 

Eron Manusov, M.D. received his Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology at the University of California, Riverside, California.  He earned his Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.  He completed a family medicine residency at David Grant Medical Center, Travis AFB, California and a faculty development fellowship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  His career in the military helped him to hone his teaching, leadership, and clinical skills.  Dr. Manusov then used that experience to care for rural and underserved populations

 

His 30 year career has focused on the care of the underserved and health care disparities reduction and has included military deployments, varied clinical care in multiple countries, academic appointments at his alma mater, and ten years of work in rural medicine. Dr. Manusov spent time at The Florida State University, College of Medicine working in the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health.  In addition to mentoring students, directing the behavioral medicine curriculum and teaching, his research focused on using simulation to teach professionalism and ethics, characteristics of rural health care physicians, and success of under-represented minorities in medicine.  His passion is the care of the underserved and he spent many hours working in indigent care clinics and working in pipelines to health care professions for young disadvantaged youth.  He spent time as the Vice President of Clinical Education and Services at the Southern Regional Area Health Education Center and program director for the Family Medicine Residency where he helped manage a multi-disciplinary Integrated Care Curriculum.

 

Dr. Manusov is passionate about providing outstanding, compassionate, and integrated care in a Patient Centered Medical Home environment and teaching learners to care for the under-served.  His philosophy is that to be able to change the healthcare system for the future, providers must work together, practice evidence based life-long learning, and love to serve.

 

Maria de Jesus Muñoz, MD

 

Dr. Maria de Jesus Munoz obtained her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.  At graduation, she was awarded the prestigious Gold Headed Cane Award.  She completed residency training in family medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.  After completing residency, Dr. Munoz returned to South Texas and has practiced in many settings, caring for the underserved communities. Dr. Munoz is board certified in family medicine, and has a special interest in preventive health and working with underserved communities. During her spare time, Dr. Munoz enjoys spending time with her family and writing.

 

Naomi Davis, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Naomi Davis received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Spelman College and credits her time there for instilling in her the importance of service leadership. Dr. Davis then obtained a Master of Public Health with emphasis in Health Education and Disease Prevention. From this, she has served on multiple HRSA grant reviews with responsibility for allocating primary and preventive health care services to the Nation’s medically underserved. Dr. Davis then received a medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine where she was inducted into The Gold Humanism Honor Society for her leadership and compassion in medicine. Dr. Davis completed a Family Medicine residency with an emphasis on Global Health and upon graduation she joined The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as clinical faculty at the Family Medicine residency program at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. She sees patients privately, volunteers her time teaching clinical skills to medical students and provides medical care in the Colonias of Hidalgo County.

 

Dr. Davis is Board Certified in Family Medicine and serves as the Family Medicine Clerkship Director. Her interests include health disparities research, women’s health, and serving vulnerable and medically underserved populations. Outside of medicine, Dr. Davis enjoys traveling, salsa dancing, humanitarian relief work, and being a foodie.

 

Adrian Sandoval, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP

Assistant Professor/ Clinical

 

Adrian Sandoval, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP is an Assistant Professor/Clinical within the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Discipline Expert (Pharmacology) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine (SOM). Dr. Sandoval is a clinical pharmacy specialist with a primary care scope of practice and faculty at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) Family Medicine Residency (FMR), Veterans Affairs (VA), and John Austin Peña Memorial Clinic. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and Board Certified in Ambulatory-Care Pharmacy (BCACP). Dr. Sandoval is the Director of the Pharmacotherapy Clinic at DHR FMR and the Director of Pharmacology Curriculum for the Department of Family and Community Medicine FMRs.  He completed an Ambulatory-Care/Community Pharmacy Residency at Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, TX. After completion of his residency, he joined the faculty at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin College of Pharmacy (COP)/University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Cooperative Pharmacy Program (CPP). Currently, Dr. Sandoval is an Adjoint Assistant Professor at UT COP. His interests include interprofessional practice/education, medication adherence/counseling, substance abuse, gender care, and primary care topics such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Outside of work, he loves to spend time with his family, travel to historical sites, spend time outdoors, BBQ, and enjoys sharing laughs with his friends and family.
